Jackal Retro, also known as Top Gunner, is a top-down run-and-gun shooter that puts players in the role of a skilled soldier on a daring mission to rescue prisoners of war.

In Jackal Retro, players take control of the elite Jackal Squad, a group of highly trained soldiers known for their ability to thrive in any environment. Their mission is to navigate an armed jeep deep into enemy territory in order to liberate and extract POWs.

The game begins with a thrilling helicopter drop-off at the enemy coastline, setting the stage for an exhilarating adventure. The primary objective is to infiltrate the enemy's main headquarters and neutralize their ultimate weapon. Along the way, players will face various internment camps where POWs are held captive. By successfully rescuing prisoners, the player's jeep can upgrade its grenade/missile launcher, enhancing its firepower.

To extract the prisoners, players must navigate their jeep to the nearest heliport where an extraction chopper awaits. Points are earned for extracting prisoners in succession, and reaching target quotas will lead to further upgrades for the jeep's missile launcher. The journey through enemy territory takes players through diverse environments such as ancient ruins, lakes, hills, and mountains.

While the jeep can run over foot soldiers, it is vulnerable to enemy projectiles and collisions with enemy vehicles. If the jeep is destroyed, a replacement can be obtained. The game concludes when the mission is successfully completed or when all replacement jeeps are lost.
